Life's Little Escapes

It's funny how easy it is to get into a state of mind that is unproductive, and just how hard it is to get out of that state of mind. I have been in that very state the last few weeks. I believe it was brought on by my time away on vacation. Upon coming back, thinking that I would be rejuvenated and ready to get back to work I was sorely mistaken. It seems the mind contains a level of inertia in whatever it is doing. I have given lots of tips on this site on how to get out of these states, but when it comes time to put them in action myself, I find it interesting how something so simple can be difficult to follow through with. It is my hope that writing this article and another one for Traders Corner today that I can launch myself out of this current state. This is utilizing what I think is the most potent tactic against this mental barrier, the name of which sums up exactly what you need to do: "Just Do It".

I find another reason I have been a little lax lately in my productivity, is because I picked up a fantasy novel (in fact a 4 book series) by an author that has long been one of my favorites. I find that when I begin reading a novel (or set of novels) I can hardly function until I finish them off. I get so engrossed in the stories being unfolded before me, that It is a battle just to put the book down. Like always, as soon as I am finished the book(s) I go back on with my life. So with this in mind, I find a better argument to sit there and read. "The quicker I finish the book, the faster I can get on with my life". it makes logical sense, but as far as time goes, It is going to take me the same amount of time to read this book, whether I sit there and do it all at once, or if i spread it out over time, whenever I have the time to actually sit down and read. So, why don't I do this? Why do I get so involved in the story that I feel the need to continue reading and ignore things that I probably be doing instead?

I consider this a mental block, because the story is an escape. Not that I have anything to escape in my life, but it is, in a sense an escape from reality. I think we all need some form of escape, but w7e have to watch just how much of an escape it becomes. Some people use substances or alcohol as their escape, and others use games, hobbies, sports or even knowledge as theirs. No matter what, in the end it is still an escape from whats happening in your life. I think some of these forms of escape are very good. Ones that make you utilize your mind, and allow you to think are extremely good for the mind. But like all escapes, you need to be in control them and you need to take them in moderation. And I believe moderation is the key. You have to be able to see when it is too much, when you have gone too far and started hurting the good things in your lives. I am not talking about physical pain, or any damage at all, but its the point when you start neglecting anything else that might be more important. When you are in that escape, it is hard to know what may be more important then what you are currently doing. But, try to listen to your gut feeling, and especially the people you trust, your close friends and family. The people who love you for who you are, and only want whats best for you. Their words may seem like folly to you, but try to keep enough of an open mind to at least consider their words, and see the situation from their point of view.

So next time you find yourself in an escape, whether it be a good book, or something more intoxicating, make sure you think about what you are doing, and if you have anything else that should take precedence. Remember, moderation is the key, so enjoy your time in your escape, but remember to return home when the time is right.
